A Bar Bitch in Need...... |
Well.....I have been doing ongoing job searching while debating which bar to tackle next....I'm swinging back and forth, back and forth over DC or VA....
I've been asked back for what looks like a fourth and final interview with a galactic superpower of a firm in VA for a land acquisition team who doesn't seem to mind my JD status and loves the fact I can really read a survey (who knew?) .....so I'm leaning in the VA direction.....which means I'm going to be in need of advice on the VA exam....and will be needing VA review materials.....hit me up people and make me some offers eh? |

I just took VA less than a month ago (feels like years) and I must be honest - it was painful. I fear that I may be needing my books again for July. I took and passed TN in July 2005 and then waived into DC. I took VA because in this area a second bar is almost a must.
I guess I'll find out in late April how it went - altho they don't post results till May 1 (or so they claim). I walked out of TN feeling as expected - unsure. I walked out of VA feeling worse than expected - there are a LARGE number of essay topics and that kicks the bar taker's ass (or mine at least). I worked through Jan, so I feel like I really needed more time. DEFINITELY devote at least 2 months to preparation. I'll let you know if I got lucky or July will be my second meeting with the big, bad VA Bar Exam.

Do you know what I love about the NC Bar? For some of us, they don't let you know until Wednesday, the DAY THEY POST.

Just an FYI for everyone, from someone who (thankfully) passed the February '07 exam. Based on information publicly available at the NC Bar Examiners site, I think the pass rate for that exam should be well below 50 percent. 520 applicants took the exam; my count of people on the "pass" list is 178. Assuming there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-30 people who either (A) had their results sealed for a disciplinary issue or (B) need to take the MPRE (or take it again if their first score expired), that would leave a rough "pass" rate of 38-40 percent. Of course, the percentage goes up if there are far more "phantom passers" than I estimated. The NCBA Journal will have the official rates published at SOME point, but I thought I'd do a little bit of the math ahead of time and see if we could get a fix on a rough percentage NOW. Kudos to those who passed, and "keep the faith" to those who didn't. It was at least a decidedly better experience than July '06, which, given NCBLE's repeated screwups, CLEARLY qualified as cruel and unusual punishment. Or felony murder (grin).

Anon (2) your calculations cannot be far from the truth. The exam sucked big time. How i wished I had passed! My boss was very cool about the whole thing, i just don't know if i'm mentally able to go through the whole process again, but i have no choice. I've come this far.
'Bitch' thanks for the blog.

I took VA last July and failed by 3 points overall with a 147 MBE score. Essays killed me. Spent 3 months doing every essay in Barbri essays over and over again and all PMBR questions (huge waste of time since the MBE changed everything...although you do get used to the style of questions). I found out 2 days ago I passed. 54 percent pass rate. My next task is to have a great career and not abolish the exam BUT urge the gate masters to loosen the size of the examiner's lock on the gate that protects the guild system.
